“She’s NOT a climate scientist!!!!!”

[The following comments were posted in various places online the week after my commentary on having children in a warming world was published in Australia. These follow on from the letters I have been sent, that were detailed in my last blog post.]

She sounds like a moron

  1. My sympathies that you’re having to put up with this crap. On occasions like these it’s always hard to credit how many moronic, ill informed and just plain vicious human beings there are.

  2. Dear Sophie,
    Stay strong. Brilliant work!
‘Tough times don’t last, tough people do’ (mountaineering saying).
    Best regards,
    Ant

  3. Wow, Sophie, the mindlessness and incredibly personal attacks in this collection are some of the worst I have seen. That said, I love the fact you have driven these denier fools to such extremes of hysteria. It tells me you have made one hell of an impact with that column. Keep winning and ignore these fools. AS.

  4. Sophie. It would seem that in the world of social media and online comments the standard rules are reversed. It would seem that to make a personal comment or attack on someone it is important that you know as little about them as possible, and fill in the yawning chasm of your ignorance with as much vitriol as possible. I, on the other hand, have the great pleasure to know you, to know your work and to know your worth. I am so proud that you will be the mother of my grandchild. Russ

  5. We need people like you far more than the vitriol-spewing people commenting above. I’m sorry you have to see this kind of abuse, but there are many people who support you. Stay strong

  6. Dear Sophie, here’s a big hug. A bit too late for hug a climate scientist day, but every day is hug a climate scientist day for me.

Oh, and those commenters…, they are an embarrassment to manhood (I have no doubt they all are men). Their anger directed at you is just a reflection of their own impotence. I am seriously in doubt whether I should be angry at them, or just pity their sad life.

  7. What the heck are are you doing sooooo RIGHT to please off the whole world political right wings sooo much | Whatever it is please keep doing it, it must be doing a service for humanity without nobody getting right, and that maybe why they are so please off with you in the first place 🙂

  8. I appreciate seeing climate scientists express their concerns. I did read your article at the time it appeared, and thought it was very courageous to write it. What some have written about you is really awful and completely unfounded. As others have said, you should do your best to ignore it and to realise that it reflects entirely on them.

  9. Hi Sophie,

This is horrendous and I’m sorry that you have to experience this. 😦 I hope you are ok. There should be better laws or regulations (or even self-regulation by web providers) to protect people against this kind of abuse online. I think that often these people don’t even realise that the person they are targeting is a real person who reads these things and could be affected by them.

Recently, there was a good documentary about online trolls: https://www.theguardian.com/world/ng-interactive/2017/mar/10/the-internet-warriors-meet-the-trolls-in-their-own-homes-video I found it quite interesting to see, even though it doesn’t really provide any conclusions.

I hope you keep up the great work that you are doing!

    Take care, Lisa

  10. Sophie, thanks for your courageous, intelligent and ethical work … appalled by the small minded vitriol … and there are some wonderful, brilliant young climate activists out there … inspirational! More strength to you.

  11. That there are conservative bigots who become infuriated or intimidated by an intelligent expressive woman who challenges their world view is no surprise. To be fair, there are also many thoughtful and constructive comments, so all hope is not lost.

What we ‘high-minded liberals’ need be mindful of is not forming our own gang of similarly set-in-our-ways hardliners. There are those of us who approach life’s decisions just the way your article expresses it. But for most of the world’s population, even in Australia, this is simply not the case. From such a perspective, these considerations will seem ridiculous or self-righteous, as much as we might see it as coming from a (albeit privileged) position of insight and empowerment. How to bridge the gap is the real challenge, not only for this conversation but for any issue from inequality to immigration, regional conflict or the economy. Personal considerations are foundational, but without the connection to broader reaches of society, they are ultimately of limited effect (e.g. being a vegetarian might spare the few animals you may have eaten, but convincing friends or restaurants that it matters can change your world).

Thanks for the work that you do and the conversations you encourage 🙂

  12. Dear Sophie,
The glaring contrast between your impressive publications and credentials as a climate scientist and the flood of vitriol elicited by your thoughtful approach to considering parenthood is stunning. Unfortunately, such abuse has become all too common in the world of “social” media.

Congratulations on excellent science published in first-rate journals. I am particularly intrigued by your research on the Australian monsoons and stability of ENSO teleconnections and potential parallels with the North American monsoon and stability of ENSO teleconnections to precipitation across North America.

Also, thank you for sustaining a constructive approach to reaching beyond the science community to communicate the challenges of climate change, which, despite ill-informed denial, threatens the entire biosphere and the future of humanity. Your daughter is fortunate to have such a thoughtful, rational, and accomplished parent as an inspiration. I confident that she will continue the tradition and be a positive force in the future world.

  13. Dear Sophie, Congratulations for an article well written. Thanks indeed for bringing climate change research to center stage. However, the ugly commentary on human interaction that followed shows what is at the base of the problem. Too many human beings with ego, primitive behaviour, illiterate with access to social media who hide behind anonymity. Time to call their bluff. Keep writing and that would be your best contribution to humankind and other species on Earth.

  14. I am amazed by the level of hatred and disrespect of these messages! In my case, I decided not to have children many years ago and one of the reasons is the one that you expose. So I can understand the questions you propose. A lot of strength for you and a lot of luck in your decision. Greetings from Uruguay.

  15. These disgusting remarks below the belt made by ignorants are the blueprint of self-deception and highest stupidity that you not affect people like us; On the contrary, their cowardice is a token of their intellectual weakness.

  16. This is really frightfull and unbelievable. But thank you for sharing Sophie. The world has to know about this.

  17. Wow, I am astonished by all these ugly comments on your well-thought-out article. I’m so glad you’re staying strong and exposing these bullies! Taking all this crap and not letting it bother you shows that you will be an excellent mother. Best of luck with your hard-won darling daughter, and keep at it with your research and outreach.
